7 Easy Ways to Add Carpet Flooring

Carpeting is a big investment for your home, and it’s important to find the right carpet, one you’ll be happy with for years.  But when it’s time to buy new carpeting, the process can be overwhelming.

There are many choices and considerations that make it challenging to choose the right carpet. However, it’s always best to take your time and do some research to gain some knowledge and ideas on the best carpet for your home.

We understand buying carpeting isn’t always easy. So, we’ve put together some tips to help you find the right carpet for your home.

1. Do Some Research Before You Shop

It’s always best to do your research before shopping for carpet. Otherwise, you’ll be caught up in the kaleidoscope of carpet colours, styles, and more. The key is to know the type of carpet you want before making a purchase.

To start your research, ask yourself these questions:

  • What type of carpet do you need? Do you need a carpet that can stand up to abuse from pets and kids? Will the carpet be in a high-traffic area?
  • Do you have a colour and style in mind? Are you looking for a carpet with specific colours and patterns? Do you prefer a solid colour carpet? Determining these factors can help you easily go through many types of carpet and focus on the style and colour you want. You’ll also save time when shopping.
  • When does the carpet need to be installed?
  • What’s your budget for purchasing carpet?
  • How to care for the new carpet?
  • Is it important that the carpet comes with a warranty?

Be sure to choose the right carpet for your lifestyle. For instance, if you have a large family and multiple pets, it’s important to choose a carpet that’s suitable for busy, high-traffic areas and spaces. If you have pets that shed, you may also want to consider carpeting that’s about the same colour as their fur. This way, their hair won’t show up all over the carpet.

These are only a few of the factors to consider when buying the right carpet for your home.

2. Measure Your Floor Space

Another essential piece of information is how much carpet you need. Do you need the carpet for one room or several rooms? Once you’ve figured out where the carpet will be installed, it’s important to measure each space correctly. The size of the space determines the amount of carpet you need.

3. Learn About Carpet Types

As you shop for carpeting, it’s also a good idea to learn about carpet types. There are several that each has its own benefits. Here are some of the most common types of carpet to consider.

Shag/Frieze: is a short, durable carpet that’s made with a twisted pile. This is a great carpet for high-traffic areas because the pile hides footprints and other marks on carpets. It offers a more informal look and style.

Berber/Loop: is made with large, uncut loops of fibres that vary in size. The carpet is usually made from wool, nylon, or olefin. This is a dense carpet that’s stain-resistant. This type of carpet isn’t the best choice for pets, as their claws can be caught in the fibres.

Textured: is made with two-toned yarn and has an uneven surface that feels soft. This carpet has a casual style that can be used in any room. Textured carpet is made with tight-twist construction, making it resist soil. This can be a good choice for use in family rooms.

Plush: is made with a closely packed yarn that creates a soft, smooth surface. Plush carpeting has an elegant look that is best used in more formal spaces. Plush carpet may show seams, vacuum marks, and footprints.

Pattern: is made with a combination of cut and loop pile that can be used to create more texture and patterns. The pattern usually looks as if it’s been cut into the carpet and may feature several shades of one colour. This feature allows the carpet to hide wear and dirt.

4. Choose a Neutral Colour

When you’re not sure about the colour or style of carpet you want, it’s a good idea to choose a neutral colour. Neutrals can be a great choice for any type of décor because they blend in with everything, including furniture and wall colours.

5. Take Carpet Samples Home

When shopping for carpeting, the colours in the store may vary from what the same colour looks like in your home. The colour variation is caused by the different types of lighting used in the store, which generally use brighter lights to better display their products.

So, it’s always a good idea to ask the salesperson for a carpet sample. That way, you can take the sample home and see how the colour looks in the room.

6. Choose Quality Materials

Shopping for carpeting can be an adventure. There are many styles and types of carpet to consider and you may find one that really seems right for your home. However, it’s imperative to check the quality of the materials used in the carpet. You can find the details of each carpet on its label.

Here are some of the signs a carpet is a high-quality product:

  • Face weight should be between 34- to 40-oz
  • Tuft twist should be a 5 or higher (the more tufts, the more durable the carpet)
  • Density rating of 2,000 or more (this is the thickness of the carpet fibres and how tightly they’re packed)
  • Look for carpets that have BCF not staple fibres (staple fibres shed more)
  • Carpet should have a 10-year texture retention warranty (the carpet is warranted to keep its shape after being walked on)

7. Don’t Let a Salesperson Talk You into a Carpet You Aren’t Comfortable With

Salespeople can be some of the most helpful when it comes to buying carpeting. However, some can also be pushier and try to get you to buy a carpet you really don’t want.

So, if you feel the salesperson is being too pushy, it’s OK to walk away. Carpet is a huge investment for your home, and the last thing you need is carpet you don’t want or even hate.

Summing It Up

Use these tips to ensure you buy the right carpet for your home. Get a carpet you’ll love for years and fits in well with your lifestyle and family. When you have the right carpet, your home will look and feel amazing!
