How to Choose Pet-Friendly Flooring

usually happy and excited to see; well the dogs are anyway!

Are you shopping for new flooring for your home? Do you have concerns about pets and your new floor? We understand. The right flooring for pets needs to fit their activities and claws! If you’re not sure which flooring is best for your pets, then read on.

We’ve put together some tips and considerations that will help you choose the right flooring!

What is Pet-Friendly Flooring?

The right flooring for pets needs to be comfortable and safe for them. In addition, the floor should be easy to clean and resistant to sharp nails, dirty paws, and potty accidents. These are all common when you have a pet!

The other consideration is that the flooring should be a good fit for you and your family, too. Here are some features to consider in pet-friendly flooring:

  • Waterproof/water resistant
  • Scratch-resistant
  • Stain-resistant
  • Comfortable for pets
  • Provides good traction for pet’s paws
  • Durability and flooring that’s right for you and your family

This list seems like a tall order; however, there is flooring that’s great when you have pets.

What’s the Difference Between Waterproof and Water resistant Pet-Friendly Flooring?

The terms “waterproof” and “water-resistant” can be confusing. After all, don’t they mean the same thing? The answer is no. There’s a difference between these two floorings.

Waterproof flooring doesn’t allow water to penetrate the flooring, even if there’s quite a bit of water or the water stays for a long time on the floor. This type of flooring is excellent when you have pets (and young kids); however, it tends to be more expensive.

However, it does have some benefits that water-resistant flooring doesn’t have. For instance, waterproof floors easily survive spilled water. As a result, you don’t have to worry about hardwood floorboards swelling or mould growing in the substrate. Water simply can’t go through waterproof flooring.

Water-resistant flooring describes how the flooring materials protect the flooring substrate from water. It’s also less expensive than waterproof flooring. These floors are easy to install.

However, water-resistant flooring is the time the water stays on the floor. With this type of flooring, it’s necessary to quickly wipe up spills and puddles to avoid damage to the floor. Otherwise, the water will seep through the floor and damage the material underneath.

Types of Flooring Best for Pets & Your Family

The best choices for pet-friendly flooring include luxury vinyl flooring or laminate flooring.

Pet-Friendly Luxury Vinyl Floors

What makes luxury vinyl floors so suitable for pets? For one thing, this type of flooring is waterproof. There’s no danger that water puddles will soak through to the substrate. If your dog or cat has an accident on the floor, it won’t be ruined.

What’s more, vinyl flooring is scuff- and scratch-resistant, even if your pets have long nails. Vinyl is also a less expensive option and comes in a variety of patterns and colours. If you’d like a wood floor but don’t want to worry about pet damage to the flooring, then it’s possible to find luxury vinyl flooring that looks like wood.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is another great option if you’d like to have wood floors. The one downside of laminates is that they’re not waterproof. However, laminate floors look and feel like real hardwood floors.

The top layer of laminate flooring is water-resistant. If your fur baby has an accident and it’s cleaned up quickly, the floor will not be damaged. It’s essential not to allow moisture or water splashes to sit on laminates. The moisture or water can be absorbed, causing the flooring to warp and swell.

What About Solid Wood Floors?

Solid wood flooring is a premium product, which means it will be more expensive. However, the flooring is beautiful and can add a beautiful touch to any décor. It’s possible to choose the grain pattern and colour, too.

When it comes to using solid wood flooring with pets, it’s a good idea to use a water-based polyurethane finish. It makes the hardwood floors more durable, and the extra protection keeps the floor safe, even when your cat or dog is rampaging around the house!

Another consideration is to avoid flooring from softwood species, such as bamboo, pine, and more. These materials are highly absorbent and are not durable enough to withstand pet claws and water puddles, or moisture.

Can Carpet Be a Pet-Friendly Choice for Flooring?

There are many types of carpeting that are made specifically for pets. The carpets are made to be resistant to stains and dirt. However, moisture and stains can still work down through the carpet backing to the subfloor. Cat owners may have a particularly hard time with carpeting. Our feline fur babies are known to mark their territory, which can be pretty stinky and stain. Also, it’s almost impossible to clean the carpeting all the through, leaving residue in the carpet. Not a very hygienic choice.

If you do want to go with carpeting, then choose carpeting that is pet-friendly. These usually include a moisture backing that protects against puddles and more. When this is combined with a moisture-proof pad, the carpet can be quite durable and comfortable for you and your pets.

Another thing to watch for is the type of weave in the carpet. Berber or a continuous weave can be unravelled by pets, such as a dog or cat! You know how cats love strings!
