Debunking Common Wood Floor Myths

Hardwood floors continue to be a popular choice for homeowners. However, several myths about wood floors may cause some not to consider this an optimal flooring choice! So, we’ve done some research to find those myths and debunk them. There’s no reason to avoid having a stunning wood floor in your home!

Myth 1: Wood Floors Take a Lot of Maintaining

The first myth is that many people believe wood floors take a lot of maintenance. However, that’s simply not the case. Modern wood floors are made to resist damage, such as scratches, dents, or wear badly.

When it comes to maintenance, these floors simply require a vacuum cleaner or broom and a soft mop. What could be easier?

The flooring requires dusting about twice a week to remove dust, dirt, loose grit, and more. In addition, liquids should be wiped up quickly and not allowed to sit on the floor. It is true that while wood floors are water repellent, they’re not waterproof.

That’s all there is to caring for and maintaining wood floors!

Myth 2: Hardwood Floors are Expensive & Time-Consuming to Install

It is true that hardwood floors can cost more when you first buy them. However, over time, wood floors are more cost-effective than some other types of flooring. When wood flooring is installed and cared for correctly, they can last for many years. And they may only need to be repaired every few years or so if that.

If you decide to go with hardwood flooring, then it’s best to hire a professional flooring installer. The professionals have the experience and knowledge to ensure the floor is installed the right way, the first time.

Myth 3: Wood Floors are Terrible for Homes with Pet and Kids

Many families with pets and kids worry that wood flooring is the worst. They worry about their pets and kids damaging the floor. However, hardwood floors are still one of the best, even if you have kids and pets!

That’s because today’s modern wood flooring has been created with families in mind. In addition, if you have high traffic areas, such as entryways and hallways, using runners or rugs can reduce some of the wear and tear on the floor.

If you have pets, it’s a good idea to keep their nails trimmed. For one thing, a pet’s long nails could cause them to “skate” on the surface of the floor. Some pets can become terrified of “skating” and/or falling for this reason. So, be sure to keep your pet’s nails trimmed to avoid this problem.

Myth 4: Cutting Down Trees for Flooring is Not Sustainable

Hardwood flooring has come a long way over the past century or so. While it’s true that in the past, forests were carelessly cut down to create flooring and other products, today, things are much different. Most flooring manufacturers are aware of how their practices and products can have a negative impact on the environment.

For this reason, many flooring companies are choosing to only use sustainable wood that’s been legally sourced. The wood used for their flooring is not imported from parts of the world that are open to illegal logging practices.

The trees used for wood flooring products are only taken from sustainable sources, while manufacturers may even use reclaimed wood repurposed from other structures such as homes. Some popular types of sustainable wood include bamboo, cork, and more. These are trees that grow quickly and produce beautiful hardwood flooring products.

Myth 5: Hardwood Floors are Cold & Don’t Hold in the Warmth

Another popular myth is that hardwood floors are cold in the winter and that they do little to hold in the warmth. However, the truth is very different. The fact is that wood floors are wonderful insulators that bring a natural element into the home. They also create an easy-care surface, even in active households.

In the winter and summer, wood maintains a steady temperature. Wood is dense and porous, which keeps the wood from storing extremes of temperature. Instead, the hardwood floors maintain a stable temperature.

There may be some situations where a hardwood floor could be chilly. In that case, underfloor heating can help to ensure the room stays warm.

Myth 6: Wood Floors Scratch Easily

Next on our list of hardwood flooring myths is the one that says wood floors scratch easily. This may have been true in the past; however, modern wood flooring is completely different.

Today, hardwood flooring is both durable and beautiful. Some types of wood, such as oak, aren’t as easy to scratch. It can easily withstand children, pets, dropping of pans, and more.

Even so, bear in mind that all wood floors eventually show wear. However, it’s entirely possible to re-sand and re-seal a wood floor to bring back its beauty and improve durability at the same time.

Myth 7: Wood Floors and Engineered Wood Floors are the Same

Finally, the last myth on our list is that wood floors and engineered wood floors are the same. The truth is very different. Solid wood floors are made with planks of wood, which is a piece of wood that’s solid from the top down.

On the other hand, engineered wood is made from many layers of wood and veneer. You may also hear it called laminated wood flooring for this very reason. At the same time, it’s true that laminated wood floors are more stable, durable, and less prone to warp.

However, solid wood floors can be re-sanded and sealed many more times than laminated wood floors. When you stop to think of the cost and value involved, wood flooring wins hands down.
