How to Add Character to Your Home with Flooring

When you have your own home, you want it to be beautiful and welcoming. This is the place where you and your family come to rest and recoup after a busy day. No matter what décor you’ve chosen, the goal is to create a place of comfort and to personalise your home to add character.

When you buy a newly built home or one that’s new to you, the place may lack some character. That’s normal. You might think of this as a blank slate, where you can add personal touches to bring out the character and add interest.

One way to do this is with new flooring! If you’re looking for a way to spice up your home a bit, consider new flooring!

Natural Wood or Engineered Timber Flooring

Wood flooring continues to be popular. It’s a great way to add warmth to a room. Engineered timber flooring is another option if wood flooring isn’t right for you. Wood flooring blends with most décor and styles, and it works in most rooms.

For instance, let’s consider a living room. A living room with modern décor can be elevated with natural wood or engineered timber flooring. Wood creates a “together” look for spaces with open-plan layouts. Area rugs can be used to create zones of living space, leaving wood on show in between. Flooring from natural wood or engineered timber can also anchor a space.

Wood can offer a warm, attractive, cosy look to a room. However, it can also make a room more formal. It all depends on the décor, the wood and its colour, and more.

LVT Flooring

While wood flooring is beautiful, it can also be hard on the wallet. So, if you’re on a tight budget, you may want to consider LVT flooring.

LVT flooring comes in a wide range of colours and patterns, offering another creative way to add character to a space. It’s even possible to find LVT flooring that looks like wood flooring. Plus, it’s easier and faster to install than wood floors.

Many homeowners choose LVT for their bathrooms. One reason is that LVT is more tolerant to spills and moisture. The flooring’s also warmer and more comfortable on bare feet. In addition, LVT lasts longer and resists stains.

Here, again, if you’d like the look of marble in the bathroom but you’re on a tight budget, LVT that looks like marble, is a great choice. You have the look of marble without the costs.

Porcelain or Ceramic Tile Flooring

Porcelain and ceramic tile floors are another way to add character to your home; they’re made with recyclable materials, making this an eco-friendly choice for your home.

Tiles are available in a wide range of patterns and colours. So, it’s easy to create a design that’s unique to your home. You can quickly turn a dull room into something more fantastic with tiles.

For instance, patterned tiles make a gorgeous kitchen floor. It’s also a great way to bring a room together with other decorative elements in the space. The kitchen is the heart of the home, where everyone gathers for meals, cooking, and visits. Creating a kitchen that’s attractive and welcoming is key to creating a lovely home.

Adding a patterned floor is a great way to create interest in a space that’s usually more utilitarian. Plus, tiles are easy to keep clean.

Tiles can also be used in the bathroom. Porcelain tiles can be used to replicate the look of other materials, such as limestone or marble. It’s easy to upscale a bathroom without the care that real stone requires. You can easily have the look and natural variation of marble in your bathroom. This adds an elegant look and feel to the space.

Porcelain or ceramic tiles are also a great choice for the entryway. Patterned tiles can create more interest and make what’s usually a drab space more beautiful. For instance, you might choose a geometric patterned tile to create a sophisticated look in the entryway. Or you can choose a more relaxed pattern for a warmer and more inviting appearance.

Add Interest with Carpet

In the past few years, many carpets were done in neutral colours all the way through those. That’s bland and doesn’t add character to a space.

On the other hand, patterned carpets add some character and pzazz to a room. It’s also a practical option in modern homes. Carpet comes in a wide range of colours and patterns, so it’s never been easier to create a beautiful space.

For instance, you may want to go with plaids or stripes in some rooms. Botanicals might be a great choice for your bedroom. It’s that easy to find and install carpeting that adds more character to a room and creates a great statement. And we have to say that a patterned carpet is also great for hiding stains and dirt!

Another idea is striped carpets. They are beautiful in the bedroom and can even make a space feel wider and longer as the stripes draw the eye along with its lines. It can also make the space feel more cosy and comfortable, adding a beautiful vibe to the space.

How to Choose Different Flooring in Different Rooms

It can be challenging to choose the right flooring in different rooms. However, you can follow these tips to choose the best flooring for your room:

Use a Colour Scheme

Using a colour scheme for a room or an entire house is a great way to choose flooring for your home. The key is to ensure that colours blend from the entryway to other parts of the home.

And if you have a small home, you may want to consider putting down one colour and type of flooring throughout the main living areas. This is a great way to visually expand the space.

Think of Flooring as a Linear Design Element

When it comes to interior design, flooring presents a linear design element. A uniform look creates a greater sense of space. So, rooms adjacent to one another may be done in the same flooring and colour.

For instance, a kitchen and family room that are adjacent may be done in the same tile or wood flooring. On the other hand, bedrooms and hallways near one another are done in the same carpet and colour.

Plank Width is Important

Hardwood, engineered timber, and LVT flooring come in planks, so their width must be considered when choosing the right flooring.

For instance, it’s best to use wider planks in a smaller space. Smaller patterns (including parquet floors) can make a small room look too busy and cramped.

So, consider choosing planks that are about 5” or a little more in width. You’ll end up with fewer seams, giving the room an uncluttered, clean appearance.

Floor Direction

Similar to plank width, it’s also important to consider the direction a floor is laid:

  • Laying long planks lengthwise can make a narrow room appear even narrower.
  • Flooring laid on the diagonal can make the space look larger.
  • Planks laid width-wise recede from the eye, making even a smaller space appear longer and have more depth.

Summing It Up

Modern flooring trends present you with more options than ever before. If you’re renovating a room or your entire home, flooring can be a great way to add more character and personality to every room in your home!
