How long does a flooring installation take?

How long does it take to install flooring? This is a common question we hear quite a bit. The answer isn’t very simple, however. Flooring installation depends on several factors.

Things to Consider

Professional flooring installation depends on different factors, which include prepping for the work, repairing damaged surfaces, as well as the number of installers needed for the project. It can take as long as a day for the prep work, which may include stripping the old flooring and preparing the surface for the new flooring. Then it may take another day to install the flooring.

Other factors that determine how long the work takes are the size of the room and any custom specifications that are needed.

The Shape of the Subfloor

Sometimes the sub-flooring needs to be fixed before the flooring is installed. This can add a few days to the project. However, if the subfloors are in good condition, this means the job will start faster.

How Long Does It Take to Install Hardwood Floors?

Here, again, the answer depends on various factors. These can include the condition of the subfloor, the size of the project, and the installation method that will be used.

In general, it can take anywhere from a week to two weeks to install a hardwood floor. Remember, though, that each project is different. This is a general timeframe for the installation of hardwood flooring.

Next, the type of flooring impacts how long the installation time will take. Prefinished hardwood or unfinished hardwood will take different amounts of time to install. Prefinished hardwood flooring is already done as far as the finish is concerned. This can take days off the installation time.

However, an unfinished wood floor can take longer because it will require a finish to be added to it. The finish can take a few days to dry. This means the prefinished hardwood flooring is faster to install.

How Long Does It Take to Install Laminate Flooring?

Laminate flooring is a great choice and is an affordable option. This type of flooring is also extremely durable. What’s more, laminate flooring can even be a better choice than hardwood flooring, which is usually much more expensive. Instead, you can choose luxury vinyl planks that look the same as wood flooring.

Laminate flooring must be allowed to rest and become acclimated to the new environment where it will be installed. If the planks are not allowed to acclimate properly, they may begin to buckle and separate, as well as shrink or swell. This happens because laminate flooring is made from natural woods that can be affected by temperature and humidity changes.

Acclimation can take anywhere from 48 hours to 72 hours. Next, the floor will need to be installed, which can take up to a day. It depends on the size of the room and any special areas that need to be cut precisely. After this, the flooring will need to cure for about 24 hours before anyone can walk on it.

How Long Does It Take to Install Carpeting?

The length of time needed to install carpeting mainly depends on the size of the room, the type of carpeting, and the number of installers needed. Overall, installation usually takes about a day. However, it will depend on the following factors:

  • Amount of carpet used
  • Tearing up old flooring
  • Repairing the sub-flooring (if necessary)
  • Removal of all furniture
  • The type of carpet chosen

How Long Does It Take to Install Vinyl Flooring?

When it comes to vinyl flooring, installation is usually pretty fast. However, it will also depend on what needs to be done on the job, including repair of the sub-flooring. It will also take time to remove furniture, fixtures, and fittings that are in the way of installing the vinyl flooring. In addition, any recently applied wood or concrete will first need to dry before the work can begin.

The vinyl will need to lay in the room where it will “live” for at least 24 hours. This allows the flooring to acclimate to the new environment, ensuring the best fit. In addition, any existing flooring should be removed before installation can take place.
